For the second time this season the opponent was BSL who this year is one of the top teams in Division 2. Funny thing is that BSL have never managed to take even one point away from the Vikings so a competitive match was expected.

The Vikings squad was hit by a couple of absentees as first of all Michael was sick and couldn’t be in goal. Also last years MVP – Martin had a foot injury and not being able to play his usual midfield role he decided to fill in as the keeper. Worst of all was the loss of central defender Richard who unfortunately had some very urgent business to attend to – enough said!

The lineup: Martin; Travis, Breitner, Graeme, Stein; Mofok, Chris, Jannik, Lars; Udom, Ruj.

Subs: Tim, Mattias, Hallas, Micke.

It didn’t take to long for the first chance to arrive. Lars took a long throw-in that Graeme flicked on in front of goal. Mofok showed up in the right spot but his effort went over. Travis went down the right side and hit a cross to Ruj whose shot went wide. So a positive start for the Vikings. BSL came close but the player hit his shot wide of the goal. Lars did some good runs down the left side and managed to get some crosses into the box. Udom did well to get into the penalty area and his pass found Ruj whose shot was blocked by a BSL defender. Not to long after the Vikings was caught by a quick BSL counter attack but Martin did well to save the effort.

It was to be the Vikings who finally went in the lead. Stein released Lars on the left side with a great pass. Lars cut into the penalty area and the BSL keeper could only block his effort. Ruj did what a striker is supposed to do and tapped the loose ball into the open goal. 1-0.

BSL didn’t take long to come up with an answer. Hallas followed a ball out but to everyone’s surprise the linesman didn’t see it out. A BSL player hit a good cross and Travis effort to clear the ball went into the path of a BSL striker who could equalize. 1-1.

After the equalizer the Vikings tried to pressure BSL on their half of the field and Travis hit two good crosses but nothing came out of it. Hallas made a back pass to Martin who didn’t expect the BSL striker to come at him with such lightning speed. As he tried to clear the ball the BSL striker managed to get a foot on it and direct the ball into the goal. 1-2.

Vikings won a free kick well inside the BSL half of the field. Micke crossed it well to Jannik whose header was blocked by the keeper from point blank range. Breitner went up to clear a long ball but unluckily he instead flicked on the ball towards the Vikings goal. A BSL striker took advantage and scored from close range. 1-3.

Lars found Udom with a nice pass but his shot was saved for a corner. Lars took the corner and at the far post Graeme rose up to head the ball into the top corner of the goal. Great goal and Vikings now had a chance to get back in it.

Shortly after Vikings won another corner and again Lars stepped up to take it. One would think BSL could now see a pattern evolve but even so they could not stop Graeme from getting his second goal. 3-3 and Vikings were back on level terms.

Next big chance fell to BSL as one of their players beat the offside trap and went one on one with Martin. Martin did very well to save the shot though. The end of second half saw BSL adding some more pressure and Vikings could be happy with the halftime score.

Second half continued as first half ended with BSL keeping possession of the ball. Lars made a fine interception and was alone on goal. His shot was saved for a corner by the BSL keeper. Graeme had a good header from the resulting corner. Few minutes later BSL had a dangerous shot that Martin managed to save for a corner. Vikings almost took the lead as Lars crossed a free kick into the penalty area. One BSL defender tried to clear the ball but instead directed it towards his own goal and the ball bounced off the crossbar. Ruj chased down a long ball and got to it just before the BSL keeper. He kept possession inside the box and then passed it back to Chris who made a turn and then gave it back to Ruj. Ruj made a swift move past the BSL defender and fired home with a powerful shot. 4-3.

Shortly after BSL had kicked off, Ruj found Micke around the middle of the field. Micke took a touch towards the goal and without hesitation hit a screamer off the post and into the net – surely goal of the season so far. 5-3 and BSL looked on the verge of a knock out.

Jannik took the ball up through central midfield and played a one two combination with Ruj. Moving into the penalty area this looked like a decider but the effort turned into a back pass that the BSL keeper could easily pick up.

As one BSL player ran down the middle Travis suddenly felt the urge to draw the line. With a perfectly timed American football tackle he cancelled out the threat. The referee was being generous and only handed him a yellow card. The following free kick forced Martin to come up with another good save. BSL won a corner and as the ball came into the box the referee called a handball against Mattias and awarded a penalty for BSL – not the most obvious penalty though. The BSL player scored and it was now 5-4.

Ruj had another good effort but the keeper managed to push the ball just over the crossbar. However at this stage of the game it was mostly BSL who put pressure on the Vikings but their attempts on goal were not too accurate. Micke found Ruj with a great through pass and after beating his defender Ruj hit the post. Micke followed up on the loose ball but his effort went over. BSL had one last chance to equalize as they broke through the Vikings defense and Martin had to make two excellent saves to keep the ball out of the net. 5-4 was the result as the referee blew the final whistle.

The second win in a row for the Vikings against a well playing BSL team. Man of the match was Martin for his outstanding performance in goal. Ruj and Lars both played a great game and Graeme did well in defense not to mention his two goals. This was also last game for Lars who will be missed on the left midfield.
