Vikings kicked of their 2008/09 season with a tricky fixture against last seasons relegated Division 1 team German All Stars (GAS).

Kick off was at 16:00 but still the conditions were hot and very humid. Vikings were missing a couple of key players due to injury or other obligations so a couple of new faces were mostly welcome. Thomas, Joachim, A, Tum (Keeper) and Lars who traveled all the way from Pattaya just to be a part of this important season opener!

Vikings started out in their normal 4-4-2 formation with Tum in goal, Travis on the right back, Jannik on the left and Breitner and Richard in central defence.

Midfield was Martin, Chris, Joachim and Thomas. Up front Mofok and Bjernaer. Lars and A started as subs.

First half saw none of the teams dominating and also there was a shortage of attempts on goal. Just as Vikings appeared to take the upper hand, GAS was given a free kick in the left side close to the penalty area. The following cross managed to travel past everyone and sneak in at the far post – 0-1.

Vikings still tried to play simple football but could not create any real chances so not to surprising the GAS could take their lead into halftime.

Graeme who coached from the sideline did a good job to keep the Vikings players focused and after the halftime speech the team managed to put some more pressure on the GAS. During this period the Vikings managed to get some crosses into the box and also won some corners. One corner was only half cleared by the defense and Jannik had a go from outside the area. The ball was deflected by a GAS player and left the keeper with no chance – 1-1 and Vikings were right back in it. Video evidence also left no doubt that this was indeed no own goal!

After the equalizer Vikings kept on the pressure and when Martin V’s throw-in was flicked on by Chris and found Mofok, everyone thought it was 2-1, but Mofoks volley only hit the crossbar and stayed out– unlucky. Also Martin got himself alone with the GAS keeper but failed to convert.

Instead the GAS struck back with a cross from the left side that found a player completely unmarked. No chance for Tum as the GAS player put the ball away in the top corner – 1-2. Vikings didn’t give up but kept fighting to stay in the game. This attitude paid off when Mofok found Bjerner on the left side. Bjerner beat his defender and raced into the penalty area. With a cool finish he left the keeper no chance and the Vikings had once again come back from behind – 2-2.

In the end of the game the referee had many strange decisions which resulted in some frustration and Chris managed to get himself a yellow card as well. All in all it was a fair played game though. As it turned out the teams had to settle for a share of the points and no one could really be to disappoint with this based on how the game went.

Man of the match was Bjerner.
