It was time for the second group game in the cup tournament and the Vikings were looking to secure some points against the Div 2 opponent IPlay. It looked very promising as a big squad had turned up for the late afternoon kick-off. Some experience was added to the squad as the two famous Vikings players Claus and Arvling made their season debut.
Lineup: Hallas; Arvling, Breitner, Stein, Jannik; Mofok, Chris, Martin V, Fran; Tim, Ruj
As the game came underway it was IPlay that had most of the possession without creating much danger. The Vikings seemed very unfocused and struggled to string some passes together. Often the strikers got caught offside but the IPlay defense looked shaky and Vikings seemed most likely to get the first goal. Andreas was fouled by the keeper just inside the penalty area and he took the resulting penalty kick himself. Unfortunately the keeper made a diving safe and kept the ball out.
Taking the lead didn’t really wake up the Vikings as the whole team still looked very much off. IPlay created a couple of chances but still didn’t look that dangerous. Mofok and Tim battled each other for the ball in the IPlay penalty area – Tim got there first but hit the ball wide. So as halftime came up the score was still 1-0 but surely not a performance the Vikings could be proud of.
Shortly into the second half an IPlay player was suddenly free on goal but Hallas made a good safe. This should have been the wake up call but still the Vikings struggled to find their game. Claus had a good shot but the keeper just managed to keep the ball out. As the Vikings didn’t manage to build on the lead it was instead IPlay that once again had a player free on goal. This time there was no mistake and the game was now tied up. 1-1.
It wasn’t long after the equalizer before some weak defending once again allowed an IPlay player to get in a good position. With a good finish he scored his second goal of the game. 1-2.
The Vikings looked as if they didn’t know what had hit them but slowly they took control of the game and tried to get the important equalizer. Both Chris and Mofok had shots off the crossbar and there were plenty of other good chances as well. However it was a bit too little, too late and instead IPlay scored a third to close out the game. 1-3.
Certainly a very frustrating afternoon for the Vikings and the remaining two group games must now be won in order to proceed to the next stage of the competition.
