Man of the Match

Martin V

After a win in the first game of the season and a solid performance in the Summer League the Vikings felt confident to take on French team Les Gaulois. Niklas and Hallas were not available for this game while Richard remains a long term injury.

The lineup: Marcus; Joel, Breitner, Mikkel, Stein; Jannik; Mofok, Martin V, Chris, Andreas; Ruj

Subs: Tim, Fran and Christian

The team started out in a 4-1-4-1 formation hoping to close down the strong French midfielders. This worked well enough and the Vikings came close to taking the lead after both Ruj and Martin V had chances. It was however Les Gaulois that scored first after a corner kick was headed into goal. 0-1.

After going in front the French team started to take control of the game and they increased their lead after a tricky cross caught Marcus wrong footed. 0-2.

The Vikings kept working hard but the Les Gaulois players were more confident on the ball and controlled the midfield. At halftime the score was 0-2.

Second half saw a Vikings team desperate to get back into the game. It was still Les Gaulois dominating but the Vikings had chances as well. Chris sent Jannik towards goal with a pass but the keeper did well to save the effort. Martin V had a good free kick attempt but this was saved as well by the surprisingly good keeper. Finally the Vikings were rewarded for their efforts as Martin V split the French defense with a great pass to Chris. Chris lifted the ball past the advancing keeper to make it 1-2.

With around 10 minutes left the Vikings had plenty of time to score the equalizer but it was not to happen. Instead Leas Gaulois closed the game with another header to make it 1-3. In the dying minutes Martin V almost scored as he hit a freekick towards the top right corner. The keeper made a very impressive save though.

So the final score was 1-3 and the first defeat of the season is a reality. On the positive side it must be said that the team stayed competitive to the very end but Les Gaulois just played better today.

Man of the match went to Chris.
