After a tough preseason with mixed fortunes it was finally time to kick off the Div 1 campaign. For this important game a strong squad of 15 players had turned up – and the ones not on time went in The Sheriff’s black book.
The lineup: Marcus; Jannik, Breitner, Mikkel, Stein; Mofok, Chris, Martin V, Niklas; Andreas, Tim.
Subs: Joel, Ruj, Christian, Fran.
The weather was hot as ever but still the game started out in a high tempo. Sunbelt did most of the attacking with a couple of quick players up front. The Vikings didn’t manage to settle down and get some passes going so it was mostly long balls from both sides. Sunbelt took the lead after a player came through on the left and crossed it well to one of their strikers who made no mistake. Not a great goal to concede as it looked much too easy. 0-1
After falling behind the Vikings started to create some chances and Ruj was always a threat to the Sunbelt defense. Martin V made a good run and found himself one on one with the keeper but couldn’t put it away. Fran who came on as the right winger had a good chance as he cut inside the area but his pass to Chris was blocked. Some good chances and the equalizer would have been well deserved. The defense did better and it seemed possible that the Vikings would get back into the game. At halftime the score was still 0-1 though.
Only a couple of minutes into the second half Ruj was awarded a free kick near the penalty area. Niklas stepped up to take the free kick and hit an absolute screamer past the Sunbelt wall and into the top left corner. 1-1.
This was exactly the start the Vikings had been looking for and everyone seemed fired up now (some mostly because of the strong sun). More pressure was piled on the Sunbelt team as the midfield did good to stress their defenders. Andreas made a great run down the left flank and passed back to Ruj who scored with a cool finish. 2-1.
It was all Vikings at this stage and the Sunbelt players looked a bit tired. There were some hard challenges from both sides but mostly fair – except for the evil bloke that fouled Martin V!
Marcus pulled out some good saves and Joel made some vital tackles to fend off the Sunbelt strikers. However the defense did well and didn’t allow any more goals. As the final whistle went it was 2-1 for the Vikings and a great start to the season.
This was a great team performance with everyone fighting hard for the win. Man of the match was Joel.
