The 19 players applied to play, but only 16 were selected, as the glorious coaching skills of C1 and C2 debated as to who that group should be. With so many to choose from the pressure was on the coaching staff to ensure a strong squad for the game……….again they got it right….
The squad as always, arrived early and most seemed ready to go, however it was evident that the previous days wedding festivities for Jesper and Nalinee had provided an excuse for a few to look as though they should probably be in bed, instead of at a football match. The pre-match talk seemed to centre around the younger members of the squads, previous night/morning antics at the post wedding party……………….I think I heard one or two mention that they came home at 7am!! Aahh I remember those days well……
Anyway back to the game………hot as hell when the game started. Vikings looked a strong side with the only regular absentee being the keeper, but the shoes were quickly filled by one of the slightly groggy headed party animals, Breitner. BU looked a younger, fitter team, and that point was expressed by the coaches prior to the game, so plenty of running was on the cards.
Anders, fresh from his solo ‘goal of the season’ last week (and still talking about it) fancied himself as sweeper again, C1 was back in the team after missing last weeks game due to a weekend picnic in the north of Thailand, and wanting to quickly re-establish his place on the team. Other notable inclusions was the hard working Niclas in midfield partnered with the latest addition Martin and Graver, who both showed great workmanship in the midfield, Jakob up front, and the central defensive pairing of Sweeper and Terry (MOM).
BU knew they could not match us for physical strength and had decided to try and use the long ball to confuse/frustrate the tenacious defence of the Vikings. However, I cannot really remember a clear chance on goal, in the first half. It didn’t take long before the goals arrived in the form of 3 first half goals from Martin “the human pinball”, and two superb latter strikes from great build up play from Keld and Chris respectively to earn Niclas U a nice finish, and a superb diving header from Henrik.
The second half started with the Vikings in a commanding 3-0 lead, and the HT team talk emphasized the need to concentrate and ensure we kept tight the first 10 mins………….however, our 2 nd half goalie Anders, proved that he is capable of playing any position on the field, with the exception of goalkeeper. Two soft goals, the 1 st within 10mins from the restart!!!, of which Anders can only glow red with embarrassment as the ball trickled past him for the first BU goal, and the second in quick succession was probably more fault of the ref who made up the rules as he went along, allowed BU to chip a controversial free kick from outside the box into the top corner, without C2 even flinching in goal. Not even the excuse “the sun was in my eyes!” blaming the beautiful BKK sunset for the momentary blindness!!
The game tempo and tackling in midfield and defence was fast and furious as the scoreline was poised at 3-2, tempers began to flare between the two sides and with the ever lousy officiating. Added to the pain of playing in 35 degree heat, and a single goal advantage was the constant painful screaming of the BU ladies karaoke club on the sidelines!
However finally to put the game finally out of reach, Jakob as cool as you like found himself on a one on one against a charging keeper, and finished with poise (he does not score easy goals) his 3 rd goal in recent weeks….soon to be challenging C2 and Henrik for end of season top scorer!!
Well done guys…..I think one of our better performances as a Team (since my arrival), despite the two crap goals C2 let in, that kept the game interesting for the BU!
